Iconic Performer Bowen Yang Exits Saturday Night Live Mid-Season
In a surprise turn of events, Emmy-nominated comedian Bowen Yang is leaving
after seven and a half seasons. The news, confirmed by Yang in a heartfelt Instagram post on Saturday, December 20, comes as a major mid-season exit for one of the show's most popular cast members. His final episode as a cast member airs tonight, December 20, hosted by his Wicked co-star Ariana Grande with musical guest Cher.
An Emotional Farewell
Yang, who joined the show as a writer in 2018 and became the first Chinese American cast member in 2019, shared a moving tribute to his time at Studio 8H.
In his message, Yang expressed his love for working at SNL and for the people there, noting that his time at 30 Rock taught him "the value in showing up anyway when people make it worthwhile". He thanked Lorne Michaels, the cast, and crew, concluding with "The show doesn't go on because it's ready, but shiiiiit, I hope I am".
A Groundbreaking Run
Yang quickly became a fan favorite during his tenure, known for memorable characters and impressions like the "iceberg that sank the Titanic" on Weekend Update and singer Charli XCX. He earned five Primetime Emmy nominations, becoming the first featured player to receive an acting nomination in the show's history.
What's Next for Bowen?
While the reason for his mid-season departure was not officially stated, Yang joins other alums who have left outside the typical summer hiatus, such as Cecily Strong and Eddie Murphy.
Yang has several upcoming projects, including the Wicked films, a voice role in a new The Cat in the Hat movie, and an untitled comedy for Searchlight Pictures that he is co-writing and starring in with Matt Rogers.
You can watch Yang's final SNL appearance tonight on NBC or stream it on Peacock.
