A Girl becomes a Ruler in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story

by Kathia Woods

Bridgerton premiered in December of 2020 and became a worldwide phenomenon. Anyone that reads romance novels knows that the books authored by Julia Quinn were already a huge hit and with that came a built-in audience however when the Duke aka Rege-Jean Page stepped into those riding boots and was costumed in silks and other finery it leapt onto the world stage with a bang.

Season 2 held audiences equally captivated so much that the series now has a spin off in Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story. The audience gets to meet the woman on the throne in Queen Charlotte. The one who is involved in her subjects' romantic lives. The audience also gets to see a young George who only makes sparse appearances in Bridgerton. He mainly is seen being out of sorts.

Audiences can still expect the gowns, finery and of course those sexy love scenes.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story  introduces us to a young woman who comes from a province in Northern Germany who’s brother arranged for her to marry the King of England. She’s upset, scared and not excited about becoming the Queen.

Queen Charlotte : A Bridgerton Story transpires between the current day regency and the period when Charlottle first came to court. The marriage of the King and Queen is shrouded in secrecy in the first two seasons. We know the Queen is highly protective of him, and they have children. In Queen Charlotte, most of the mystery is solved.

On their wedding day, George and Charlotte first met. Surprisingly, it is not at the altar, but rather while one is attempting to flee the other.

They are intrigued as well as drawn to one another, however theirs is not a love match. The King who’s obsessed with astronomy neglects his husbandly duties at first while at the same time trying to hide his illness from Charlotte. It is never quite explained what that illness is but the treatments are aligned with the times medical assessment.

Out of all the Bridgeton relationships theirs is the most complicated. They aren’t just two young people navigating a marriage; the future of the country rides on their shoulders. This means that their relationship is under constant scrutiny by the palace.

As in previous incarnations, be prepared to have some cast members become overnight stars. India Amarteifio as Queen Charlotte is delightful. She does a great job of drawing parallels from Golda Rosheuvel, especially the mannerism. We want Charlotte to succeed because of Amarteifio’s performance. Rosheuvel continues to be a delight as the senior Queen Charlotte.

Corey Mylchreest is charming as the young King George III. Our hearts break for him as he attempts to navigate his illness.

The couple viewers will be rooting for are Brimsley (Hugh Sachs) and Reynolds (Freddie Dennis). Brimsley viewers know as the trusted Queens Butler however Reynolds is new to the fold as the King’s man. Their love for the King and Queen is beyond measure as well as each other. It’s a great representation of lgbtq romance without being political. Honorable mention goes to Arsema Thomas as the young Lady Agatha Danbury. She uses her wit and wear with all to gain her husband's favor and give Charlotte some much needed insight to help her navigate her new post. It is Lady Danbury’s intellect that will help viewers understand how the nouveu riche came to be a court. None of this will surprise anyone due to Adjoa Andoh fun turn as the senior Lady Danbury.

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story arrives just in time for courting season on Netflix May 4th with a fun six full length episodes.
