Real Estate is still a messy affair in

Selling Sunset

by Tom Soares

The long-awaited season 4 of Netflix’s most scandalous luxury real estate reality show Selling Sunset hits the streaming giant this Wednesday, just in time to turn up the heat for Thanksgiving with its breathtaking houses and unmatched drama.

Created by Adam DiVello and starring twin brothers Jason and Brett Oppenheim, co-founders of the high-end brokerage firm Oppenheim Group, Selling Sunset follows a team of all-women real estate agents as they navigate the ups and downs of the Los Angeles luxury housing market and scorching office drama.

Picking up months after the highly publicized divorce of realtor Chrishell Stause from husband and This Is Us star Justin Hartley, and in the middle of the COVID-19 pandemic, Selling Sunset season 4 shakes things up right from its first episode. With business booming and two of his agents gone - Davina Potratz left the Oppenheim Group at the end of 2020 due to growing tension with Jason, to join rival real estate company Douglas Elliman; and Christine Quinn out on maternity leave - the brothers decided it’s time to bring in new blood.

“We’re too busy to have two empty desks,” Jason says, as he invites Mary Fitzgerald to accompany him to Malibu where they’ll meet a potential new agent for the group.

And these are not the only changes for the brokers. Stause, who’s on a much promising phase in her life and career this season, has become one of the top-sellers for the Oppenheim Group and is focused on buying her first place, while Heather Young got engaged mid seasons to HGTV personality Tarek El Moussa and is working on selling a $14 million dollars house in Beverly Hills.

It has to be said, however, that Christine Quinn continues to be the best part of the show and the reason most viewers will watch the series, whether she’s just a misunderstood, audacious business woman with no fear to say what’s in her mind or the vilest antagonist of all time. Her relationship with Mary and the other agents reach an all-time high with every episode, and as the dynamic shifts and the women from new and even unexpected alliances, Christine’s steel strong influence is felt even when she’s not around.

As for the technicalities, Selling Sunset season 4 continues to impress with jaw dropping homes and views of Los Angeles, fashion, A-list celebrity cameos and flawless soundtrack. Editing also does a fantastic job giving the women enough screen time to shine.

On the not so positive side, diversity continues to be a huge issue for Selling Sunset four seasons in as none of the eight onscreen agents are women of color, although a spinoff series called Selling Tampa was announced by Netflix for December 15th, headlined by broker and U.S Army veteran Sharelle Rosado, her company Allure Realty and an all-Black women cast.

With ever-escalating drama and the most gorgeous luxurious homes money can buy in Los Angeles, California, Selling Sunset season 4 not only shakes things around to keep it entertaining over two years since its debut, but also cements the original series as one of the most iconic reality shows on Netflix.

Selling Sunset season 4 arrives on Netflix on Wednesday, November 24th.
