The Oddballs are Back in

The Suicide Squad

by Kathia Woods

The Suicide Squad reintroduces the outcasts of the superhero world. This time, James Gunn is in charge. Gunn, who was fired from Guardians of the Galaxy, was hired by DC to breathe new life into the franchise.

The Suicide Squad is both a sequel and a remake of the original film. This means that our characters are still antiheroes who must be put under duress in order to fight for their country's safety. Many of the original characters aren’t back but it does reference the original crew. This Suicide Squad is extremely aggressive.

The squad operates under the same set of rules: highly skilled/superpowered prisoners are given the opportunity to complete a lethal mission in exchange for a reduced sentence. If they accept, they can't back out because a remote bomb planted inside their head will detonate. In this film, the mission entails infiltrating a classified laboratory. This laboratory contains a weapon that will change the world's power dynamics.

This mission's roster is unique, but it's still entertaining. Bloodsport (Idris Elba), a war veteran, Peacemaker (John Cena), a man willing to go to any length to maintain peace, Ratcatcher2 (Daniela Melchoir), a woman who can control rats, Polka-Dot Man (David Dastmalchian), a man who can shoot polka dots, and King Shark (Sylvester Stallone), a shark-man who enjoys eating, all bring a tough attitude. Colonel Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), Amanda Waller (Viola Davis), and our favorite Heroine, Harley Quinn (Margo Robbie), lead this band of misfits. Pete Davison is the recipient of the award for the most notable cameo in a superhero film.

Unlike other comic book films, this one is not afraid to spill a lot of blood. Our heroes are neither politically correct nor good people. They lack team unity and loyalty, but under extreme conditions, they appear to pull together.

This film is dripping with James Gunn's distinct sense of humor. The Suicide Squad is a mash-up of warp comedy and anti-hero tropes. Blood is spilled at breakneck speed. The film has no problem with making anyone expendable. This heightens the film's sense of danger. The characters are entertaining and unpredictable.

Both the visuals and the special effects are impressive. It has its share of uncomfortable, yet exhilarating, crazy moments. A single dull moment is absent from the movie. Invigorating and entertaining fight scenes are featured throughout the film. Everybody's expectations are met with Harley Quinn's performance. TheSuicide Squad is the champion of the underdogs because of all of the above. Misfits are at the heart of The Suicide Squad's success. The Suicide Squad isn't for everyone, but for those looking for a summer action film, it fits the bill.
