A Befitting bloody ending in John Wick: Chapter 4

by Kathia Woods

John Wick is one of the most exciting action series starring the iconic (Keanu Reeves )as John Wick. In part 4 he’s still removed from the organization known as the High Table. This time he’s hiding out in Osaka, Japan. He has an ally in Koji Shimazu (Hiroyuki Sanada) but soon realizes that the only way out is to kill the High Table leader, The Marquis (Bill Skarsgård).

The action in John Wick: Chapter 4 is impressive, but the film's star is what really sets it apart from the competition. It doesn't strive too hard to be profound but delivers what its audience craves most: nonstop bloodshed.

Director Chad Stahelski's presence across all four installments contributes to the series' success. Fans of the John Wick films consistently report that they enjoy themselves after seeing the next installment. He has maintained the franchise moving forward with a vision that has kept fans coming back for more. He has also resisted the temptation to give Wick a love interest or add superficial charms.

To refresh the formula, Stahelski changed the action, opponents, and location. At the Arc de Triomphe, one of the best battles takes place. The cars circling the fighting bodies are nothing short of chef's kisses.

The latest installment is nearly three hours long, and in an age when films over two hours can be exhausting, John Wick: Chapter 4 manages to keep you interested.

This film is a fitting sendoff because Reeves, at 58, requires more time to recover but his movements remain fluid and exciting. The action scenes' pacing is still a beautiful bloody ballet.

John Wick: Chapter 4 makes a compelling case for the inclusion of the best stuntman or sequence in award shows. From Japan to France, no stuntman goes unnoticed. Fight coordinator Scott Adkins, who appears as a German crook, should also be commended for keeping the saga interesting.

It wouldn’t be a John Wick movie if our hero wouldn't be fighting against a formidable villain and this time he comes in the form of the Marquis (Bill Skarsgård). He’s a French royalty and full time mad man. He now is in control of the High Table. In a means to withdraw Wick from hiding he punishes Winston (Ian McShane) for helping Wick by demolishing the New York hotel.

The concierge of said building was portrayed by the late great Lance Reddick making it even more bittersweet.

The other ally in Wick’s life is Bowery King (Laurence Fishbourne) and the Tokyo Continental manager’s daughter.  Portraying her is  (Rina Sawayama) an international pop star making her film debut. The other side has some fun new bad guy to help the Marquis accomplish his mission in (Marko Zaror) a Criminal enforcer. The man literally has nine lives.

By the time the film gets to the final scene, one may be exhausted, but that's when things really get exciting. The final scene is a battle of wills and ultimate survival abilities. An incredible race to the top of the stairs. John Wick: Chapter 4 is an excellent way to conclude the series, however the end suggests  that there may be room for a new chapter involving someone other than Reeves to take over.

John Wick: Chapter 4 opens in theaters worldwide on March 24th
