Official Cause of Death Confirmed for Rob and Michele Reiner; Son Nick Charged with Murder
LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner's office has officially determined the cause of death for filmmaker Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner. The couple died from "multiple sharp force injuries," and their deaths have been officially ruled a homicide.
The news comes as the couple’s 32-year-old son, Nick Reiner, remains in custody, charged with two counts of first-degree murder in connection with the fatal stabbings.
Coroner Confirms Manner of Death as Homicide
According to records released by the Los Angeles County Department of Medical Examiner on Wednesday, the Reiners died on Sunday, December 14, at their Brentwood residence. The specific cause of death confirms initial reports from law enforcement sources that the couple suffered stab wounds.
The official findings indicate both Rob Reiner, 78, and Michele Singer Reiner, 68, sustained several cuts or stabs from a sharp object.
Nick Reiner Faces Murder Charges
Nick Reiner was arrested hours after his parents' bodies were discovered by the Los Angeles Fire Department following a medical aid call on Sunday afternoon.
Los Angeles County District Attorney Nathan Hochman announced Tuesday that Nick Reiner faces serious charges:
Two counts of first-degree murder.
The special circumstance of multiple murders.
A special allegation that he used a "dangerous and deadly weapon," specifically a knife.
If convicted on all counts, Reiner could face life in prison without the possibility of parole or the death penalty.
Court Proceedings and Background
Nick Reiner's arraignment, originally scheduled for Tuesday, was postponed because he was not "medically cleared" for transport from the jail to the courthouse. He is currently being held without bail and is scheduled to return to court for arraignment on January 7, 2026.
The case has drawn attention to Nick Reiner's public battle with severe drug addiction and homelessness, which was the subject of his father's 2016 film Being Charlie. A source close to the family noted that while they were accustomed to working through his problems, suggestions of a recent "heated argument" at a holiday party the night before the deaths are being disputed by family insiders.
