Demi Lovato has had some difficult times in her career, including assaulting a background dancer and battling addiction. Throughout it all, she's been able to create some fantastic songs. This film gives her viewers a firsthand look at some of the demons she has faced and continues to face.

It's easy to see why SXSW organizers would make Dancing with the Devil the opening night headline event. Many young ladies who grew up with her from Barney to Disney and still follow her on social media see her as a role model. Others would dismiss her as just another child star who was given too much too soon, yet after seeing this film, one will feel quite the contrary.

Her career has parallels to that of her contemporaries Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson. Both artists, like Demi, have been subjected to a remarkable fixation by the paparazzi to document every detail of their life.

Demi was initially introduced to us as one of Barney's friends on the wildly popular television show Barney & Friends. Later on, the Disney channel, she gained a larger fanbase thanks to films like Camp Rock and her famous television show Sonny with Chance. In her teenage years, her rapid rise to stardom via the Disney machine resulted in low self-esteem and the start of her addiction problem. She has been quite candid about her weight-loss struggles. She developed an eating disorder as a result of this. Demi also talked about how she lost her virginity because of sexual assault.

Her main motivation for filming this film is to talk about her life-threatening overdose. The original plan was to cover her while she was on tour.

The film begins with her portraying life on the road, but due to an overdose, production had to be halted. Her overdose was so bad that she was on the verge of dying. She needed to get her health in order and safeguard the one thing that allows her to make a living: her voice.

Surprisingly, it was the pandemic that forced her to rethink her life and confront her addiction. The film does provide some insight into Demi's troubles. Her friends can come across as enablers at times, and her family, while openly addressing Demi's turbulent past, doesn't appear to be fully cognizant of the issues she must confront.

The filmmaker, Michael D. Ratner, got the opportunity to speak with Demi and her team. The movie is amusing and educational, yet it keeps the audience on the edge of their seats. It's encouraging to see her concentrating on her work, but there are some red signs. Specifically, Demi still appears to be unsure of how to deal with her addiction. Also, will Scooter Braun managing her makes good commercial sense, is this good for her emotional health after his handling of Taylor Swifts affairs.

It's difficult to predict how things will conclude in the end. Her followers, friends, fellow artists, and viewers all want a happy finish to this story. In a business that treats you like commodity rather than a human we want Demi to win and most of all conquer her addiction.
