Oscar-winning filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón is expanding the cast of his upcoming Apple TV psychological horror series, Ascension, with Art Malik, Fred Loxley and Mirren Mack joining as series regulars.
The three actors join an ensemble led by Outlander star Caitríona Balfe, alongside Bill Nighy, Amanda Plummer, Christopher Chung and T'Nia Miller.
The series marks Cuarón's latest collaboration with Apple following his 2024 psychological thriller Disclaimer, starring Cate Blanchett.
What Is 'Ascension' About?
Inspired by Adam Nevill's novel Last Days, the hourlong series follows Rose (Balfe), a documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother investigating a mysterious 20th-century religious cult known as the Church of Ascension.
Rose has built her career uncovering other people's secrets but struggles to confront problems in her own life. As she investigates the organization, she becomes increasingly drawn to its teachings before discovering something far more disturbing beneath the surface.
The series combines supernatural horror with questions about faith, manipulation and the lengths people will go to protect their families.
Who Is Joining the Cast?
Malik, whose credits include The Little Mermaid and The Woman in Cabin 10, joins Mack, recently seen in 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple, and Loxley, known for Killa Bee and Number 10.
Details about their characters have not yet been announced.
Alfonso Cuarón Returns to Psychological Storytelling
Cuarón, whose films include Roma, Gravity and Children of Men, is writing the series alongside his brother Carlos Cuarón, Natalie Erika James and Christian White.
James, known for Relic and Apartment 7A, will serve as lead director and co-showrunner alongside White.
Apple Studios is producing the series, with Esperanto Filmoj and Anonymous Content also involved.
For viewers familiar with Cuarón's ability to blend intimate human drama with visually ambitious storytelling, Ascension represents another venture into psychologically complex material.
Apple TV has not announced a premiere date.
