Back to Hillman: Netflix Renews A Different World for Season 2

Class is back in session. Netflix has renewed A Different World for a second season. The pickup came just eight days after the series premiered on September 24. For a streamer known for making shows wait months for a verdict, that speed says a lot.

The numbers explain it. The sequel opened at No. 4 on Netflix's Global Top 10 English TV list with 4.2 million views, and it reached the Top 10 in 15 countries. In the U.S., it climbed to No. 1 on Netflix's Top 10 TV Shows list. Fans who grew up with Hillman showed up, and they brought a new generation with them.

At the center is Maleah Joi Moon (Hell's Kitchen) as Deborah Wayne, the daughter of Dwayne Wayne and Whitley Gilbert. That means Kadeem Hardison and Jasmine Guy are back in roles that defined a generation. Season 1 also brought back Cree Summer, Darryl M. Bell, Debbie Allen, Jada Pinkett Smith, Joe Morton, and Dawnn Lewis. That lineup made the show feel like a homecoming instead of a reboot.

Season 2 picks up after a summer of change. According to Netflix's logline, Deborah and her classmates return for sophomore year determined to reinvent themselves. Instead, they run into the consequences of past choices, uncertain futures, new romances and friendships, and bigger questions about purpose, plus plenty of fresh drama.

Debbie Allen, who directs and executive produces, celebrated the renewal by saying the show gave audiences joy, romance, relevance, authenticity, and heart. Netflix comedy VP Tracey Pakosta said the streamer is thrilled at how audiences worldwide have embraced the next chapter of the series.

Behind the camera, showrunner Felicia Pride executive produces alongside Allen, Tom Werner, Reggie Rock Bythewood, Gina Prince-Bythewood, and Mandy Summers. There's a hometown angle too: Season 1 was filmed in Atlanta.

The legacy also runs deep. The original series began as a spinoff of The Cosby Show, following Denise Huxtable (Lisa Bonet) at Hillman, and it went on to inspire a wave of students to choose HBCUs. More than 30 years later, Hillman is still making the case that a Black college campus is one of the richest settings in television.

No premiere date has been announced yet. Season 2's release date is still to be determined. Stay tuned to Cup of Soul for updates.

A Different World Season 1 is streaming now, only on Netflix.
