'Beef' Creator Lee Sung Jin Reunites With Ali Wong for New Netflix Series 'The Only Child'

The Emmy-winning creative team behind Netflix's Beef is getting back together. Series creator Lee Sung Jin has launched a new production company, Lila Pictures, and announced two projects in development at Netflix, including The Only Child, a limited drama starring Ali Wong.

The announcement, made Wednesday, November 4, comes under Lee's renewed multiyear agreement with Netflix and expands his role beyond creating television shows to developing projects and supporting emerging filmmakers and writers.

Ali Wong Returns to Netflix With 'The Only Child'

Wong will star in and produce The Only Child, playing the mother of a professional archer preparing to compete for her first gold medal. Playwright and screenwriter Ava Wong Davies, whose credits include HBO's Industry, is attached to write the series.

The project reunites Wong and Lee following the success of Beef, the dark comedy-drama that paired Wong with Steven Yeun in a story about two strangers whose road rage encounter escalates into a destructive personal feud.

The first season earned widespread critical acclaim and multiple Emmy Awards, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series and acting wins for Wong and Yeun.

While The Only Child moves away from the road rage premise, its focus on a mother navigating the pressures surrounding an elite athlete offers another opportunity to explore complicated family relationships.

Netflix has not announced additional casting or a premiere date.

A Second Netflix Drama Is Also in Development

Lila Pictures is also developing Citizen's Arrest, a drama created by Beef writer and producer Gene Hong.

The series follows two longtime friends and neighbors who become consumed with investigating a local crime while avoiding unresolved problems in their personal lives.

Hyunji Ward, formerly of Dakota Johnson's TeaTime Pictures, has joined Lila Pictures as senior vice president of film and television.

Lee Sung Jin Expands His Creative Influence

The launch represents another significant step for Lee, whose success with Beef helped establish him as a major creative force in streaming television.

The series' second season received 16 Emmy nominations in 2026, continuing its awards recognition with a new ensemble.

Beyond developing his own projects, Lee's production company intends to support emerging creative talent, creating opportunities for storytellers seeking a place in an increasingly competitive television industry.

For audiences, the immediate attraction is Wong's return to dramatic television under Lee's creative banner. For Netflix, the two new projects extend a partnership that has already delivered substantial awards recognition.

Both The Only Child and Citizen's Arrest remain in development, with release dates yet to be announced.
