Bill Hader is heading back to television comedy, and his next stop is a Philadelphia public school.
The Emmy-winning actor and comedian confirmed during his November 2 appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! that he will guest star on Season 6 of ABC's hit comedy Abbott Elementary, created by Quinta Brunson.
Hader did not reveal which character he will portray or when his episode will air.
The announcement comes as Hader and Brunson prepare for the November 6 theatrical release of the animated film The Cat in the Hat. Hader voices the title character, while Brunson plays Sherri. Their upcoming collaboration on Abbott Elementary will bring the two performers together in live action.
Hader is best known for his eight seasons on Saturday Night Live and HBO's critically acclaimed comedy Barry, which earned him two Emmy Awards for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series.
His arrival adds another recognizable name to Abbott Elementary's growing roster of guest stars.
Season 6 has already welcomed Miranda Cosgrove and Ali Wong, continuing the show's tradition of bringing established performers into its fictional Philadelphia school.
But celebrity appearances have never been the foundation of Abbott Elementary's success. Brunson's workplace comedy has built its following through sharp writing, relatable characters and its portrayal of educators navigating an underfunded public school system.
The question now is whether Hader will play himself, as some previous celebrity guests have done, or introduce an entirely new character into the school's already unpredictable environment.
Either way, his background in character-driven comedy makes him an intriguing addition to the ensemble.
Abbott Elementary airs Wednesdays at 8:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with episodes streaming the following day on Hulu.
