Calvin's Is Open Again: Prime Video Drops First Look at Barbershop Series, Premiering February 2027

Pull up a chair. The shop is back in business.

On Wednesday, Prime Video released the first images from Barbershop, its new comedy series inspired by the film franchise, and set a premiere date. All eight episodes will drop at once on February 10, 2027. That puts the series right in the middle of Black History Month, which is fitting for a franchise that has always treated the barbershop as the community's town hall.

Jermaine Fowler (Coming 2 America, Superior Donuts) stars as Travis "Trav" Walker. Trav comes back to Chicago to honor his grandfather's legacy at Calvin's, the South Side shop at the heart of the films. But he finds that neither the shop nor the city is the way he left it. He has to earn his place among a new crew of barbers and regulars who all have plenty to say. The release describes Calvin's as a place of "sharp fades, sharp opinions," and that has always been the franchise's main draw.

A comedy ensemble built for shop talk

Fowler is surrounded by a deep bench of comedic talent: Brett Gray, Punkie Johnson, Roy Wood Jr., E.J. Bonilla, Bresha Webb, Bokeem Woodbine, Tiana Okoye, and Langston Kerman. The guest list keeps the stand-up and sketch energy going, with Zack Fox, Ego Nwodim, Diallo Riddle, Ziwe, Tituss Burgess, Comedian CP, Devon Walker, and Belmont Cameli all expected to stop by the shop.

Casting Roy Wood Jr. is an especially smart choice. Few comedians today are better at turning a political argument into a punchline, and that is exactly what the chair at Calvin's calls for.

Keeping it in the family

The strongest sign that the series understands its roots is who is running it. Marshall Todd, who co-wrote the 2002 original, is writing and co-showrunning with Max Searle. George Tillman Jr. and Robert Teitel of State Street Pictures, the team behind the films, are executive producers. They're joined by Kevin Hart's Hartbeat, Busy B Entertainment, and Prominent Productions. Fowler also serves as an executive producer, and Oz Rodriguez (SNL) directs.

This is not the franchise's first time on television. Showtime aired a short-lived Barbershop series in 2005. This time, though, the show has streaming reach and a cast full of names who came up in today's comedy scene. Prime Video is launching it in more than 240 countries and territories.

Why it matters

The original Barbershop films gave audiences something rare: Black men talking honestly and hilariously about politics, love, money, and legacy, in a space that belonged to them. The films also sparked real debate, and that is part of their legacy. If the series holds onto that spirit while reflecting how Chicago and Black neighborhoods across the country have changed, Calvin's could stay open for a long time.

Cup of Soul will be watching. Barbershop premieres February 10, 2027, on Prime Video.
