Dream Team Alert: Ralph Fiennes, Colin Farrell & Wagner Moura Set For Comedy Art With Brazilian Director Fernando Meirelles
A powerhouse ensemble is coming together for one of the most exciting film announcements out of the Cannes Market. Three-time Oscar nominee Ralph Fiennes (Conclave), Oscar nominee Colin Farrell (The Banshees of Inisherin), and recent Oscar nominee Wagner Moura (The Secret Agent) are teaming up for Art, an English-language comedy feature directed by Brazilian filmmaker Fernando Meirelles (City of God, The Two Popes) with a screenplay by multiple Oscar winner Christopher Hampton (The Father).
The film is based on Yasmina Reza's celebrated stage play, which first opened in Paris in 1994 before becoming a global sensation — earning productions in London's West End, on Broadway, and beyond. The story centers on three longtime friends — Serge, Marc, and Yvan — whose bond is tested when Serge purchases a large, expensive, entirely white painting. Marc is outraged by the purchase, while their friend Yvan finds himself desperately trying to keep the peace, only making things worse in the process. It's a sharp, funny exploration of art, taste, and the fragile nature of friendship.
Art reunites Meirelles with Fiennes, who previously collaborated on The Constant Gardner, and with Farrell from the Apple TV+ series Sugar. Meirelles has also produced several projects with Moura, making this a reunion of creative partners across the board. Producers Charles Finch (Priscilla) and Tracy Seaward (Philomena) are on board, with Patrick Wachsberger's 193 launching international sales at Cannes.
With this caliber of talent both in front of and behind the camera, Art is already one to watch.
