John Cena's 'Matchbox: The Movie' Trailer Drops at Comic-Con — And It's Wilder Than You Think
ohn Cena has traded in his wrestling boots and Fast Saga keys for a nuclear warhead and a group of estranged childhood friends — and Apple TV+ used its first-ever Hall H takeover at San Diego Comic-Con to prove it.
On Saturday, July 25, Apple Original Films debuted the first trailer for "Matchbox: The Movie" as part of a two-hour Hall H showcase that also spotlighted "Dark Matter," "Silo," "Widow's Bay" and "Mayday." Cena took the stage alongside co-stars Jessica Biel, Arturo Castro, Sam Richardson and Teyonah Parris to introduce the footage to a packed convention crowd — the same room that once hosted The Hobbit and Marvel's Phase 4 reveal.
From Toy Aisle to Tarmac
Inspired by Mattel's die-cast toy line — which has been a fixture of childhood collections since 1953 — "Matchbox: The Movie" follows a group of lifelong friends whose quiet lives get upended when Sean (Cena), their long-absent former leader, resurfaces as an undercover CIA agent. What starts as an awkward reunion spirals into a frantic, globe-trotting mission to save the world.
The trailer opens on nostalgia — Biel's character, Amy, wistfully tells Sean it's "been a long time since we played Matchbox cars together" — before the plot takes a hard turn. Sean warns his friends they're about to "wake up someplace different," and they do: tied up on a plane bound for parts unknown. From there, the group is thrust into recovering a missing nuclear warhead the CIA believes Sean stole, with Amy delivering the film's rallying cry: "We need to re-steal the bomb so we can get our lives back."
Reactions out of Hall H likened the tone to "Game Night" colliding with "Mission: Impossible," while others drew comparisons to a "Fast & Furious" spinoff filmed inside a heist thriller — high-octane chases, globe-hopping stakes and a script that doesn't take itself too seriously.
Built for Speed
Director Sam Hargrave, best known for choreographing the propulsive, one-take-style action of "Extraction" and "Extraction 2," brings that same physicality to "Matchbox." Cena has already been teasing the practical stunt work he got to do on set, including wheelying a souped-up VW bus and driving a roll-cage-tested 6x6 Land Rover through the Sahara Desert.
The screenplay comes from David Coggeshall, and the film is a joint production from Apple Original Films, Skydance Media and Mattel Films — the same banner responsible for bringing Mattel properties like "Barbie" to the screen, though "Matchbox" is chasing a very different lane: action-comedy over fashion-doll fantasy.
The Cast
Joining Cena, Biel, Castro, Richardson and Parris are Danai Gurira, Golshifteh Farahani, Corey Stoll, Bill Camp and Randeep Hooda — a bench deep enough to suggest Apple is positioning this as a marquee tentpole for the platform, even as it heads straight to streaming rather than theaters.
"Matchbox: The Movie" premieres October 9 on Apple TV+.
Why It Matters
Apple TV+'s decision to claim Hall H for the first time this year — rather than run individual series panels, as it has since its 2022 SDCC debut — signals a studio looking to be treated as a convention anchor rather than a participant. Pairing "Matchbox" with awards-decorated "Widow's Bay" and established genre hits "Silo" and "Dark Matter" gave the streamer a chance to show range: prestige television, established sci-fi, and now a big, toy-inspired action swing aimed squarely at the four-quadrant audience that used to belong to theatrical blockbusters.
Whether "Matchbox" can out-race the void left by the "Fast Saga" — or simply becomes another solid-but-forgettable streaming actioner — is the real test come October. But Comic-Con crowds got their first real look, and the room left talking.
