Mary J. Blige, Dionne Warwick & A Tribe Called Quest make the Hall

The class of 2024 of the Rock & Roll Hall of fame was revealed Sunday. Ozzy Osbourne, Cher, and Mary J. Blige are included in this year's group of artists being inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its latest inductees during Sunday's episode of "American Idol." The inductees include music legends like Black Sabbath founder Ozzy Osbourne, folk-rock icon Cher, and R&B powerhouse Mary J. Blige in the performer category. The Class of 2024 includes a diverse lineup of artists, such as folk-rock band Dave Matthews Band, 80s hard rock band Foreigner, guitar legend and singer-songwriter Peter Frampton, funk and R&B group Kool & the Gang, and influential rap group A Tribe Called Quest.

Four of the eight artists being inducted in the performer category are being recognized for the first time on the ballot. These artists include Cher, Foreigner, Kool & the Gang, and Frampton.

The award for musical influence will be given to the groundbreaking American blues and R&B singer Big Mama Thornton, who originally recorded "Hound Dog" before it was famously covered by Elvis Presley. Additionally, the award will recognize the influential British blues guitarists Alexis Korner and John Mayall from the mid-20th century.

The upcoming musical excellence awards will pay tribute to two performers who have recently passed away: the beloved country-rock singer-songwriter Jimmy Buffett and proto-punk guitarist and MC5 founder Wayne Kramer, as well as rock and R&B legend Dionne Warwick and the late Motown songwriter Norman Whitfield. Buffet was recently honored at the Hollywood Bowl with a mix of performances by artists like the Eagles, Paul McCartney, and more.

This year, the Ahmet Ertegun award for music industry achievements will be given to Suzanne de Passe. She is a producer and executive who has worked with Motown and its Motown productions arm for many years. During her time with the company, she oversaw the production of film and TV projects, as well as the live performance series "Showtime at the Apollo."

In order to qualify for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, an artist or band must have released their first record at least 25 years before the year they are nominated. The ceremony for the 2024 Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction will happen on October 19 in Cleveland and will be streamed on Disney+.
