Timothée Chalamet & Josh Safdie bring Marty Supreme to NYFF63
Josh Safdie’s Marty Supreme premiered unexpectedly at the New York Film Festival on Monday, and attendees from the press who witnessed the surprise screening are already praising the Timothée Chalamet-led sports dramedy.
Marty Mauser, played by Timothée Chalamet, is the protagonist of Marty Supreme, a table tennis player who overcomes adversity to achieve greatness. The film also features Gwyneth Paltrow, Odessa A’zion, Kevin O’Leary, Tyler Okonma (known as Tyler, the Creator), Abel Ferrara, and Fran Drescher. It is reported to be A24’s most expensive project to date, with an estimated budget of around $70 million.
Ramin Setoodeh, co-editor-in-chief of Variety, took to X, formerly known as Twitter, to share his enthusiastic review, praising Chalamet’s performance, as reported by Variety.
Ramin Setoodeh described ‘Marty Supreme’ as a combination of ‘Uncut Gems,’ ‘The Catcher in the Rye,’ and ‘Jerry Maguire,’ highlighting it as Timothée Chalamet’s best performance yet. I loved it so much,” he wrote.
Diego Andaluz also praised the film, calling it Safdie’s “best film yet.” He posted on X, formerly known as Twitter, that Chalamet “delivers the performance of a lifetime in this unforgettable, awe-inspiring cinematic tour de force that fires on all cylinders.”
Film critic Brandon Lewis described Safdie’s film as a “chaotic, sprawling globetrot that breaks down the swaggering hubris of a ping-pong prodigy who can’t help but be insufferable” in his analysis following a secret screening.
Marty Supreme is set to be released in theaters on December 25.
