Charlie Hunnam is Unrecognizable as Ed Gein in New Netflix Monster Season
A new monster is coming your way just in time for spooky season—and now you can watch the official trailer.
Season 3 of Ryan Murphy's true-crime anthology is set to premiere on Friday, Oct. 3, on Netflix, featuring all eight episodes. Charlie Hunnam, known for his role in Sons of Anarchy, will portray the infamous serial killer Ed Gein. In the new clip released by the streamer on Monday, viewers get a sneak peek into Gein's dark persona, along with Laurie Metcalf's portrayal of Augusta, the mother of this season’s monster. The streamer has also released a series of new photos, which you can view below.
The anticipation surrounding the series has grown significantly, with many fans eager to see how the chilling story unfolds. As the release date approaches, discussions about the psychological depth of the characters and the show's visual style are already heating online.
Ed Gein confessed to killing two women in the 1950s and was accused of exhuming corpses to create keepsakes from human body parts. His gruesome crimes served as inspiration for iconic Hollywood horror films such as Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre. In Season 3, Charlie Hunnam portrays Gein, while Laurie Metcalf (of The Conners) plays Augusta, Gein's mother. The cast also features Tom Hollander (from The White Lotus) as Alfred Hitchcock, the director of Psycho, and Olivia Williams (of The Crown) as Hitchcock’s wife, Alma Reville.
According to the official synopsis, "In the frozen fields of 1950s rural Wisconsin, a friendly, mild-mannered recluse named Eddie Gein lived quietly on a decaying farm, hiding a house of horrors so gruesome that it would redefine the American nightmare." Driven by isolation, psychosis, and an overwhelming obsession with his mother, Gein’s disturbing crimes created a new kind of monster that would cast a long shadow over Hollywood for decades. Murphy serves as the series co-creator, collaborating frequently with Ian Brennan, who is the primary writer for Season 3.
A distinct real-life murderer who attracted substantial media attention is the subject of each season of Monster. In season 1, Evan Peters played the cannibalistic murderer Jeffrey Dahmer, while Niecy Nash played his suspicious neighbor, Glenda. Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story, the second season, was released on Netflix in September of last year. It chronicled the infamous Menendez brothers' story. In 1989, Lyle and Erik Menendez, who were portrayed by Nicholas Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch, respectively, became tabloid sensations after murdering their parents.
