Cup of Soul Show Sits Down with Alana Haim and Mamoudou Athie of A24's The Drama

Every wedding has drama. But Kristoffer Borgli's The Drama — now in theaters — takes that to an entirely different level.

The dark romantic comedy follows a happily engaged couple, days before their wedding, whose relationship is put to the test when one partner's shocking secret threatens to unravel everything. While the film centers on Emma (Zendaya) and Charlie (Robert Pattinson), the story truly ignites through their best friends — and that's where our guests come in.

Alana Haim plays Rachel, Emma's maid of honor, and Mamoudou Athie plays Mike, Charlie's best man — two scene-stealers who must grapple with the fallout of Emma's bombshell confession and their own complicated roles in it.

Haim, known as a member of the band HAIM and as the Licorice Pizza breakout who earned Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, brings her signature grounded energy to Rachel. Athie, celebrated for his work in Kinds of Kindness and trained at Yale Drama, brings nuance and warmth to Mike. Together, they are magnetic — a duo who make the already brilliant ensemble of The Drama even more impossible to look away from.

Cup of Soul Show caught up with Alana and Mamoudou to talk chemistry, collaboration, the infamous dinner scene oner, and what it really means to commit to a role — even when the plan goes completely out the window.
