Michael Mann, the director of Heat, Collateral and Miami Vice, was treated and released from a hospital after his gun accidentally went off at a Los Angeles shooting range Saturday, his representatives said.
According to TheWrap, the 83-year-old filmmaker was hurt around 4 p.m. at The Range L.A. near Sawtelle Japantown when the weapon discharged as he was holstering it. TMZ first reported the incident. Mann was stable when Los Angeles police and paramedics arrived.
"On Saturday, at a gun range, a weapon accidentally discharged while holstered resulting in a superficial injury to film director Michael Mann. He was treated and is being released," his representatives said in a statement. A spokeswoman also confirmed the "superficial injury" to the German news agency dpa.
'Heat 2' still in the works
The accident comes as Mann prepares Heat 2, his follow-up to the 1995 crime classic that starred Al Pacino and Robert De Niro. TheWrap reported that the sequel is adapted from the 2022 novel Mann co-wrote with Meg Gardiner and will reunite him with Adam Driver alongside Leonardo DiCaprio and Christian Bale. His most recent film was the 2023 biopic Ferrari, starring Driver and Penélope Cruz.
For many moviegoers, Mann's work is tied to Jamie Foxx, who starred opposite Tom Cruise in 2004's Collateral and then partnered with Colin Farrell as detectives in Mann's 2006 film version of Miami Vice.
No change to the Heat 2 schedule has been announced.
