Sandra Hüller to Campaign in Supporting Actress for 'Fatherland,' Lead for 'Rose'

Sandra Hüller will campaign for best supporting actress for Fatherland, a category shift that frees her to pursue a best actress nomination for Rose in the same Oscar race, Variety reported Monday.

The move, which Variety described as a surprise, reshapes one of the busiest awards slates of the season. As Awards Radar noted, Hüller entered the fall with four potential Oscar plays: lead for Fatherland and Rose, and supporting for Digger and Project Hail Mary.

Four films, two categories

With Fatherland now positioned in supporting, Rose becomes her only lead-actress campaign. On the supporting side, Awards Radar wrote that Digger now looks unlikely to be part of her push, leaving Fatherland and Project Hail Mary as her supporting options.

Category placement is one of the quieter but most consequential decisions studios make each fall. Splitting performances across lead and supporting lets an actor with several strong roles avoid competing against herself, and it can open a path to two nominations in a single year. The academy's acting branch ultimately decides where votes land, but campaigns signal where a studio believes a performance fits best.

The decision also lands as Golden Globe category submissions are coming into focus following Friday's deadline. On Monday, I Play Rocky was reported as a comedy submission and Club Kid as a drama, part of a wave of placement news that will shape the precursor season.
