Justin Timberlake is reportedly preparing a four-part documentary series for Apple TV that will revisit major controversies from his career, including the 2004 Super Bowl halftime performance with Janet Jackson.
According to Variety, the documentary is expected to premiere in December and will be directed by Fisher Stevens. Sources familiar with the project say Jackson will appear to discuss the incident that became one of the most scrutinized moments in live television history.
However, Jackson's participation has not been independently confirmed by her representatives.
During the Super Bowl XXXVIII halftime show, Timberlake exposed part of Jackson's breast during their performance. The incident generated widespread criticism, an FCC investigation and professional consequences that fell disproportionately on Jackson.
Timberlake continued to enjoy considerable commercial success, while Jackson faced increased scrutiny from broadcasters and the entertainment industry.
The documentary is also expected to address Timberlake's former relationship with Britney Spears, whose 2023 memoir renewed public discussion about their breakup and the media narratives surrounding both performers.
In 2021, Timberlake publicly apologized to Jackson and Spears, acknowledging that he had benefited from an entertainment system shaped by misogyny and racism.
More than two decades after the Super Bowl controversy, the questions surrounding accountability, media treatment and gender remain relevant.
For Jackson, whose influence on pop music and performance extends far beyond that single television appearance, the documentary raises another question: Will audiences hear her perspective in full, or will the incident once again be framed primarily through Timberlake's career?
Apple TV has not announced an official premiere date or released a trailer.
