A24's 'Mother Mary' Is Already One of Spring 2026's Most Talked-About Films — And It Hasn't Even Opened Yet
A24 has done it again. Long-buried wounds rise to the surface when iconic pop star Mother Mary (Anne Hathaway) reunites with her estranged best friend and former costume designer Sam Anselm (Michaela Coel) on the eve of her comeback performance. A24 And from the looks of the trailer, this reunion is going to be anything but a happy one.
Written and directed by David Lowery, the film features original music by Charli XCX and Jack Antonoff — a pairing that alone should tell you the sonic world this movie is building. The ensemble cast also includes Hunter Schafer, FKA Twigs, Kaia Gerber, Jessica Brown Findlay, Alba Baptista, Sian Clifford, and Atheena Frizzell. The trailer is lush, unsettling, and deeply intriguing — electrifying stage performances colliding with the kind of tension that only comes from a friendship that went very, very wrong. With original songs also contributed by FKA Twigs and a visual language that evokes old glamour cracking under pressure, the film navigates the line between devotion and destruction.
Hathaway as a pop icon unraveling. Coel as the woman who knows all her secrets. A24 behind the wheel. This is the cinematic event of the season.
Mother Mary opens in limited theaters on April 17, 2026, before going wide on April 24.
