One Golden Summer' Brings the Story of the Jackie Robinson West Team to TBS and OWN — And It's Long Overdue

This is a story America tried to bury. Now, it's finally getting its flowers. In the summer of 2014, a group of boys from the South Side of Chicago did the impossible — they captured the hearts of a nation, becoming the first all-Black team to win the U.S. Little League Championship. But when their title was stripped months later over questionable residency boundaries, the magic of that golden summer was buried under a mountain of headlines and heartbreak.

If you check the Little League records or search the World of Little League Museum today, there is still no trace of their achievement. These boys won. And the record books act like it never happened.

Now, One Golden Summer — acquired by TNT Sports in partnership with OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network — is the definitive documentary that finally hands the microphone back to the players.

Through never-before-seen footage and raw, emotional reflections from the players — now grown men — the film navigates the heavy crown of victory and the crushing weight of the media firestorm that followed, weaving together the pure joy of the game with a rigorous investigation into the systemic hurdles these young boys faced. It is ultimately a story of resilience that asks what truly makes a champion when the trophies are gone, but the bond remains.

Following its decorated debut at the Chicago International Film Festival, where it earned both the Chicago Award and the Audience Award for Best Documentary, the film has already been recognized for its emotional depth and cultural significance. One Golden Summer premieres April 7 at 10:30 p.m. EST on TBS following the Los Angeles Dodgers vs. Toronto Blue Jays game, and will air on OWN as an OWN Spotlight on Thursday, May 7, 2026.

Don't miss it.
