Back to Hillman: A Different World Celebrates Its New Chapter in Atlanta

Hillman College is welcoming a new class. I attended the Atlanta premiere of A Different World, the sequel to the series that made the fictional HBCU feel real to generations of viewers.

The new story follows Deborah, played by Maleah Joi Moon, as she begins her freshman year at Hillman. She is also the daughter of Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne, which gives her a family legacy to navigate while she works out who she wants to be. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison return as Whitley and Dwayne, alongside other familiar faces from the original series.

The new students will shape this version of Hillman, even as the historical connection heightens the excitement of the premiere. The original A Different World gave its characters room to be humorous, ambitious, uncertain, and outspoken. Its college setting opened up conversations that reached well beyond campus. The question now is what Hillman has to say to students coming of age today.

Atlanta is a fitting place to begin that conversation. Production on the sequel took place here, and the premiere offered a moment to mark the return of a series closely associated with Black college life and culture.

Felicia Pride serves as showrunner, writer, and executive producer. Debbie Allen, whose work helped shape the original series, returns as a director and executive producer. Their involvement brings experience from both eras of A Different World to this new chapter.

The Atlanta premiere celebrated that legacy. Whether the sequel earns a place of its own will depend on what it does with Deborah and her classmates after viewers arrive at Hillman. For now, the doors are open, and a new generation is ready to walk through them.
