Corey Hawkins is back in The Man in My Basement

In the teaser trailer for Andscape's next film, The Man in My Basement, Corey Hawkins is confronted with a frightening pitch from Willem Dafoe about his family home. The film, which is based on Walter Mosley's novel, will premiere on Hulu this fall.

Nadia Latif directs the film, which marks her directorial debut. Latif also works as a screenwriter alongside Mosley, who penned the original novel in 2004.

Hawkins stars as a father attempting to rescue his family's house. Things go bizarre when a man offers him a deal that could rescue his home but exposes him to other scary possibilities.

The premise of the film is

In the African American neighborhood of Sag Harbor, New York, Charles Blakey (Hawkins) is out of work, out of luck and on the verge of foreclosure on his ancestral home. A knock on the door from a mysterious businessman, Anniston Bennet (Dafoe), brings a bizarre and lucrative proposition; rent his dusty stand-up basement out for the summer and receive enough money to clear his debts for good. Once Charles accepts, he finds himself led down a terrifying path that confronts his family’s ghosts and locks the men in a terrifying puzzle, at the heart of it race, the source of their traumas and the root of all evil.

If Jonathan Majors' life had turned out differently, the film might have looked slightly different.

Majors was originally scheduled to star in and executive produce the picture through his production business, Tall Street Productions, in 2023. However, in 2023, Majors' ex-girlfriend accused him of violence and assault, causing the most significant setback in his career. Majors was tried and convicted of two counts of assault and battery in 2024, but he avoided jail in exchange for a year of domestic violence counseling.
