Boston Blue: Blue Bloods Enter "A New Chapter" Under Donnie Wahlberg's Leadership

The legacy of Blue Bloods will continue with the upcoming show, Boston Blue.

Blue Bloods, the long-running police procedural featuring Tom Selleck as Police Commissioner Frank Reagan, concluded in December 2024 after 14 seasons. Donnie Wahlberg, who has portrayed Detective Danny Reagan since the series premiere on CBS, will reprise his role in the new spinoff, Boston Blue.

Interestingly, the new show was not initially intended as a Blue Bloods spinoff. According to Deadline, the original concept focused on an LAPD officer transferring to Boston. However, because Wahlberg has real-life ties to the city, CBS decided to adapt the storyline to feature his Blue Bloods character.

In May 2025, during a press event for the network's fall 2025 schedule, TVLine reported that Wahlberg promised, "No Blue Bloods fans will be disappointed" with Boston Blue.

“Danny’s story will continue the Reagan family’s. You can’t have Danny without the Reagans," he explained. "There’ll be connective tissue to the old family. But we’re also going to get to discover a new family and continue the tradition of telling their stories while still sharing the Reagan stories."

Here’s everything to know about the Blue Bloods spinoff, Boston Blue, including its premise, cast, and premiere date.

Boston Blue follows Detective Danny Reagan (Wahlberg) as he relocates to Boston to join the city's police department.

In Boston, Danny is partnered with Detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green), the eldest daughter of the Silver family, which has a strong legacy in law enforcement.

Given that Danny's life is based in New York, the reasons for his move to Boston remain unclear, including whether his transfer was voluntary or mandatory.

Additionally, Danny's home life has changed significantly; he is now a widower, and his children are all adults.

The Boston Blue cast includes Wahlberg reprising his role as Detective Danny Reagan, alongside Martin-Green, who will portray Detective Lena Silver.

According to Deadline, at a Paramount press conference in May 2025, Martin-Green stated, "We love the Reagans. We have all loved the Reagans for so long. As Detective Lena Silver, who comes from a prominent law enforcement family, you will love the Silvers too."

"I’m super excited for this partnership and to be back in the CBS family," added the Star Trek: Discovery alum.

Other cast members include Ghostbusters icon Ernie Hudson, who will portray Reverend Peters, the patriarch of the Silver family and a pastor at a historic Baptist Church in Boston, according to Deadline.

Psych star Maggie Lawson is also part of the project as Sarah Silver, Lena's stepsister and the superintendent of the Boston Police Department, per the outlet.

Most recently, The Better Sister star Gloria Reuben was cast as the Silver matriarch and Boston's district attorney, Mae Silver.

The cast and crew of Boston Blue gathered for their first table read on July 8. The show is set to premiere this fall on CBS, although an exact release date has yet to be announced.

Boston Blue will air on Friday nights at 10 p.m. ET, taking over the time slot previously occupied by Blue Bloods, according to TV Insider. It will follow Fire Country and its new spinoff, Sheriff Country.
