Godzilla Minus Zero is headed for a No. 1 debut at the domestic box office with an industry-estimated $31 million from 3,254 locations, TheWrap reported on Nov. 7. The Toho sequel, released in the U.S. by GKids, earned $14.7 million on opening day.
That start is nearly triple the $11.4 million opening of Godzilla Minus One in December 2023. The predecessor went on to gross $57.4 million domestically, and TheWrap noted it will be watched to see whether the sequel can top that total or proves more front-loaded.
A rare No. 1 for a non-English film
According to TheWrap, Minus Zero is only the fourth non-English-language film to open at No. 1 in the U.S., joining The Passion of the Christ, Zhang Yimou's Hero and Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle. Audiences gave it an A CinemaScore, and it holds a 90% critics score and a 96% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Interest in the franchise is also showing up at home: JustWatch ranked Godzilla Minus One as the most-watched film across streaming platforms in the past week, TheWrap reported.
The rest of the weekend
Warner Bros. Pictures Animation's The Cat in the Hat is in second place after a $6 million opening day from 4,003 locations and is tracking for an $18 million weekend. It also earned an A CinemaScore.
A24's You Can See Everything, Nathan Fielder's documentary about Elizabeth Holmes, is estimated at $8 million in its fourth weekend, tied for third with Sony's Indian epic Ramayana: Rise of a Legend. TheWrap projects the documentary's domestic total at $78.9 million through Sunday. Angel Studios' Drummer Boy rounds out the top five with an estimated $7.9 million from 2,850 locations.
Studios report final weekend estimates on Sunday, so the numbers may shift.
