'I Play Rocky' Submitted as a Comedy for the Golden Globes

I Play Rocky will compete in the Golden Globes' musical or comedy categories rather than drama, a notable placement for one of the season's buzziest awards contenders.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the Amazon MGM decision, which Awards Radar noted came in the aftermath of Friday's submission deadline. The film had been widely expected to land in drama.

A crowd-pleaser chooses its lane

Peter Farrelly's film follows Sylvester Stallone, played by Anthony Ippolito, as he fights to write and star in the original Rocky. It drew a huge response at the Toronto International Film Festival and later screened as the London Film Festival's surprise film, where Cup of Soul reported that Stephan James plays Carl Weathers.

Category placement is one of the most strategic calls a studio makes each fall. The Globes split their top film and lead acting races between drama and musical or comedy, so the choice decides which races a film and its performers enter. Awards Radar framed the choice as Amazon MGM leaning into the film's crowd-pleasing side. How Globes voters respond is still unknown.

For Black audiences, the casting is the hook. James' turn as Weathers, who played Apollo Creed, gives the film a Black performer in one of its key roles, and the comedy placement decides which Globes acting races he and the rest of the cast will compete in.

The Globes' Oct. 30 submission deadline has now passed, and studios are revealing their category choices one by one. Cup of Soul laid out the timeline in our Golden Globes deadline explainer and the rest of the month's key dates in our November awards calendar.
