Wanda Sykes Goes Home to Hampton for Legacy and Talks With Cup of Soul
Where you tape a comedy special says something. Most comics pick a big-city theater and a clean skyline shot. For her third Netflix hour, Wanda Sykes went back to Ogden Hall at Hampton University, the HBCU where she graduated in 1986. She called it Legacy.
That choice shapes the whole hour. The jokes still land where Sykes always aims them: at politics, at power and at anybody who thinks a Cybertruck is a personality. But the room is different. This is a hometown crowd in the best sense, an audience that knows exactly where she came from. And with Julie Dash behind the camera, the filmmaker behind Daughters of the Dust, the special is shot with more care than this format usually gets.
I sat down with Wanda Sykes to talk about going home, about working with Dash, and about what "legacy" means to a comedian still at the top of her game. Watch our full conversation below.
About Legacy
Wanda Sykes: Legacy premiered on Netflix on May 19, 2026. It's her third stand-up special for the streamer, after Not Normal (2019) and I'm an Entertainer (2023). She taped it in February 2026 at Ogden Hall on Hampton's campus in Virginia.
Julie Dash directed. Sykes produced it with Page Hurwitz through their company, Push It Productions. The material covers ground longtime fans will recognize: a political moment Sykes compares to a miserable escape room, plenty of sharp observational bits, and stories from the years that made her.
On taping at Hampton: “It was my love letter to Hampton and to HBCU’s”
Where to watch
Wanda Sykes: Legacy is streaming now on Netflix.
It's a special about where Sykes came from, made in the room where it started. Going home is a risk, because a hometown crowd sees through you fast. Sykes earns that room.
