DC's 'Clayface' Crosses $100 Million Worldwide in Its Third Weekend

DC's Clayface has joined the $100 million club. The R-rated horror film is projected to reach $109 million worldwide by the end of its third weekend, including $56.6 million in North America and $52.4 million internationally, according to Warner Bros. figures reported Sunday by Screen Rant.

The film added about $7 million domestically this weekend, Collider reported, even as it lost 532 of the 3,458 North American theaters it opened in. Screen Rant reported the film cost about $44 million to make, and Collider said it has already broken even theatrically. Collider added that Clayface has now passed Lee Cronin's The Mummy and Evil Dead Burn at the worldwide box office.

A smaller DC bet that paid off

Directed by James Watkins from a script by Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, Clayface stars Tom Rhys Harries as Matt Hagen, better known as Clayface, and Naomi Ackie as Dr. Caitlin Bates. James Gunn, Peter Safran, Matt Reeves and Lynn Harris produced. The film opened Oct. 23.

Its road to $100 million was slower than DC Studios' bigger releases. Screen Rant noted Superman crossed the mark on its third day and Supergirl on its 10th, while Clayface got there around day 16. The budgets tell a different story: Screen Rant reported Superman cost $225 million and Supergirl $170 million to $186 million, with Supergirl finishing at $126.4 million worldwide.

The milestone is a win for Ackie, whose move into the DC Universe Cup of Soul covered ahead of release. The film previously topped the global box office, and You Can See Everything edged it for No. 1 domestically over Halloween weekend.
