A Mother-Daughter Relationship Put to the Ultimate Test
Colleen Hoover is back on the big screen with “Regretting You”, which is based on the best-selling book It Ends with Us. Josh Boone, who also directed The Fault in Our Stars, is in charge of the movie. It stars Allison Williams and McKenna Grace as a mother and daughter whose relationship is put to the test after a horrific catastrophe. This highly anticipated movie from Paramount Pictures promises to have the author's trademark mix of heartbreak, family drama, and romance. It stars Dave Franco and Scott Eastwood, among others. The movie explores hidden truths and the difficult process of putting a life back together after a loss. As the mother and daughter deal with their new situation and redefine their relationship, viewers will be taken into a raw, emotional story of love and strength.
“The story unpacks grief in a compelling and real way, so I spent a lot of time contemplating what it would feel like to grieve someone when it’s very complicated,” Star Allison Williams shared with Marie Claire.
McKenna Grace and Sam Morelos, two young actors, talked to the Tribune about what it's like for young adults to understand that their parents are not perfect and how it affects the bond between parents and kids.
Clara Kent is a young woman who wishes to get away from her mother's overprotective ways. She is played by McKenna Grace. She quickly discovers that her mother's protection wasn't about being in charge, but about keeping her image of her father and aunt, who she looked up to, safe.
The actor described how Grace's world is shattered when she discovers the truth about the people she loves.
“ I portrayed a teenage girl, an ordinary teenage girl who experiences all the intense emotions that come with that age—when it feels like everything is the end of the world. She also faces some tragic events and suffers from a lot of miscommunication. There's just so much happening in her life, and I often wondered how I would react in her situation. We did share some wonderful moments, and since it's a romance, there were also fun and lighter scenes. However, I really empathized with Clara. She had a difficult journey in this film.”
One of the most endearing things about Clara is that she’s not the popular girl; if anything, there’s a nerdy side and unsureness about her that makes her more relatable.
“I thought it was excellent that they paired her with the rebellious, philosophical sort who is unemployed. I also appreciate that, typically, you would look at someone like Clara and assume she’s confident and popular. I love that she was a bit dorky and unsure of herself because that made her more relatable in my eyes. We all have that one person in our lives, you know? It’s important to talk about having fears and insecurities, especially when portraying a character who seems perfect on the surface but actually has their own struggles,” Grace explains.
One of the bright spots in Grace's life is her best friend Lexie, played by Sam Morelos. Sam is the best friend who will help you have fun while also guiding you through difficult times.
“She is a genuine, lovely, and fiery lady who served as a fantastic tower of support for Clara at this insane period in her life,” is Morelos perspective on Grace.
One thing Lexi does exceptionally well for Grace is not sugarcoat things for her, especially when Grace attempts to portray her mother as the villain when she is not. Morelos explained why telling the truth is an essential part of being a good friend.
“Lexi is a pillar and a touchstone for Clara because it is simple. In my experiences, I relate to Clara because I often find myself overthinking and spiraling into a state of wallowing. My buddies are the ones who get me out of it. Life is brief, but it is also quite lengthy. So, you can't concentrate on these unpleasant feelings. Life continues after everything. No matter how difficult life becomes, there is always a sense of lightness. There is always hope for a brighter future.”
“Regretting You" offers an intimate glimpse into the lives of the Grant family, revealing how a tragedy uncovers a web of secrets. However, one does not need to belong to the Grant family to grasp the overarching theme that family relationships can be complex. This complexity exposes human emotions; despite potential disappointments, love perseveres.
Regretting You hits theaters worldwide on October 24th.
