🎬 Cannes Is Open! Here's Everything You Need to Know About Opening Night at the 79th Festival

The South of France is calling, and cinema answered. The 79th Cannes Film Festival officially kicked off on May 12, 2026, and opening night did not disappoint—at least on the representation front. Let's break it down.

THE CEREMONY

French actress Eye Haïdara—Franco-Malian and absolutely luminous—served as host for the opening ceremony at the Palais des Festivals. She's following in the footsteps of some iconic women who've held that role, and she made it her own. We see you, Eye.

Jane Fonda and Gong Li took the stage together to formally declare the festival open—a dual honor that felt intentional and powerful. Gong Li said it best: "Jane comes from the West. And I come from the East. Tonight we stand together here. This is the magic of the Cannes Film Festival." Cinema as bridge. That's the whole thing right there.

THE JURY — AND YES, REPRESENTATION IS PRESENT

Jury president Park Chan-wook is joined by Demi Moore, Ruth Negga, Chloé Zhao, Isaach De Bankolé, Diego Céspedes, Laura Wandel, Paul Laverty, and Stellan Skarsgård. This jury is genuinely global, and we're here for it.

Let's talk about who matters to us specifically:

Ruth Negga—Irish-Ethiopian and effortlessly chic—hit the red carpet in a green-and-black tassel dress. Isaach De Bankolé, the legendary Ivorian-American actor, showed up in a navy one-piece suit with a brimless gold cap. The presence of both individuals on the jury signifies that Black and African voices are currently represented at the highest level in world cinema. That matters.

Ruth Negga wore a custom Christian Dior gown in ethereal emerald, paired with Chopard diamond jewels. She was styled by Karla Welch. Immaculate.

THE HONORARY PALME D'OR

Peter Jackson touched down in the South of France to accept an honorary Palme d'Or, with none other than Elijah Wood on hand to present it. A Lord of the Rings reunion at Cannes? Sure, why not? Jackson joked, "What goes around comes around," referencing the ongoing Warner Bros. sale to Paramount/Skydance's David Ellison. He was not wrong for that. Barbra Streisand is also receiving an honorary Palme d'Or during the festival.

THE OPENING FILM

The opening night crowd settled in for Pierre Salvadori's The Electric Kiss, described as a light period romance—though early word suggests it likely won't be crossing the Atlantic anytime soon. Honestly? That's fine. Cannes opening films are often more about the ceremony than the cinema.

THE RED CARPET

Sequins were the unofficial dress code—Demi Moore, Jane Fonda, and Maika Monroe all arrived dripping in them. Joan Collins brought full drama with an orchid-inspired gown and black opera gloves by Stéphane Rolland. Also spotted on the carpet: Tyrese Gibson and True Whitaker — always wonderful to see Black Hollywood making the trip to the Côte d'Azur.

THE BIG PICTURE

The 79th Cannes Film Festival runs May 12–23, with 22 films in competition vying for the Palme d'Or. The closing ceremony—and the jury's big decisions—arrives on May 23.
