Bad Bunny Lands First Lead Role in Historical Epic 'Porto Rico
Fresh off a historic Super Bowl halftime performance, Bad Bunny (Benito Martínez Ocasio) is set to take on his first major leading film role in the upcoming historical drama
Porto Rico. Directed by fellow Puerto Rican icon and multiple Grammy winner René “Residente” Pérez Joglar in his feature directorial debut, the film is being described as a "Caribbean western" and a love letter to the island.
A Star-Studded Cast and Crew
The production has assembled a high-caliber ensemble of Hollywood heavyweights to join Bad Bunny:
Starring Cast: Javier Bardem, Edward Norton, and Viggo Mortensen are all officially attached to the project.
Creative Team: The screenplay was co-written by Residente and Oscar-winner Alexander Dinelaris (Birdman).
Executive Production: Academy Award winner Alejandro G. Iñárritu (The Revenant) is on board as an executive producer.
Plot and Historical Context
Inspired by true events from the late 19th century, the film centers on the life of José Maldonado Román, known as Águila Blanca (White Eagle). A revolutionary figure, Román led a gang of ex-convicts in a fight against colonialism during the period when Spain ceded Puerto Rico to the United States.
Producer Edward Norton compared the film’s ambition to landmark epics like The Godfather and Gangs of New York, noting it will explore the "shadow story under the American narrative of idealism".
