Class Is Back In Session: Original Stars Join Netflix's 'A Different World' Sequel Series
Fans of the iconic '90s HBCU sitcom A Different World are in for a treat: four of the show's beloved original cast members are officially returning for the highly anticipated Netflix sequel series. The news confirms that while a new generation will lead the show, the legacy of Hillman College's most famous alumni will live on.
Jasmine Guy (Whitley Gilbert), Kadeem Hardison (Dwayne Wayne), Cree Summer (Freddie Brooks), and Darryl M. Bell (Ron Johnson) are all set to reprise their roles in a major way throughout the 10-episode series order.
A New Generation at Hillman
The sequel series centers on a fresh new face at the fictional Historically Black College/University: Deborah Wayne, the youngest daughter of Whitley and Dwayne.
Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon (Hell's Kitchen) has been cast as the free-spirited freshman Deborah, who arrives at Hillman eager to build her own legacy while navigating the large shadow cast by her legendary parents.
Joining Moon as part of the new student body are Alijah Kai, Chibuikem Uche, Cornell Young IV, Jordan Aaron Hall, and newcomer Kennedi Reece
Legacy Stars and Creative Team Return
Showrunner Felicia Pride and executive producer Debbie Allen confirmed the return of the original cast members, stating their excitement to bring back the legacy stars in a way that respects their history while introducing relevant storylines for today's audience.
The production also sees the return of several original creative team members:
Debbie Allen is back as an executive producer and will direct three episodes, including the premiere.
Original series writers Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood are serving as executive producers.
Production is scheduled from February to April 2026.
