Hillman Is Back in Session: "A Different World" Sequel Trailer Has Landed
Nearly four decades after it first changed the game for HBCU representation on television, Hillman College is reopening its doors. Netflix has dropped the trailer for its long-awaited "A Different World" sequel series, and the internet has thoughts — most of them extremely emotional.
What's In the Trailer
The footage centers on Deborah Wayne, played by newcomer Maleah Joi Moon, the daughter of "A Different World" fan-favorites Whitley Gilbert and Dwayne Wayne. Deborah steps onto Hillman's campus for her freshman year carrying both the weight and the glamour of her parents' legacy — including, fittingly, a nod to her father's signature flip-up sunglasses. The trailer leans into that generational thread from its opening frames, giving longtime fans an unmistakable wink before introducing its new class of Hillman students.
Old Heads Welcome
This wouldn't be a proper Hillman homecoming without the OGs, and Netflix delivered. Jasmine Guy and Kadeem Hardison are back as Whitley and Dwayne, joined by Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks and Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson. Jada Pinkett Smith is also returning as Lena James, a character she's said was modeled after her own personality by director and executive producer Debbie Allen. Rounding out the new class are Alijah Kai, Kennedi Reece, Jordan Aaron Hall, Chibuikem Uche, and Cornell Young IV, playing the fresh faces who'll define this new era of Hillman.

Why This One Hits Different
The original "A Different World" wasn't just a "Cosby Show" spin-off — it's widely credited with boosting HBCU enrollment and giving Black college life a rare, layered spotlight on network TV. A revival landing in this current cultural moment, with the same creative DNA (Debbie Allen back at the helm) and a story that literally passes the torch to the next generation, feels less like nostalgia bait and more like a deliberate full-circle move.
Deborah's arc — stepping into a legacy she didn't ask for while trying to carve her own identity — is the kind of premise that could resonate well beyond fans of the original. It's a coming-of-age story wrapped in a bit of "the kids are alright" reassurance for anyone who grew up watching Whitley and Dwayne finally get their happy ending.
