Hillman Is Calling: Netflix Drops First Teaser for A Different World Sequel — and It's Already Giving Us All the Feels
The fall semester at Hillman College is officially back on the calendar—and this time, it's streaming.
Netflix dropped the first teaser for its highly anticipated sequel to A Different World today, and yes, we are already emotional. The premiere date is set for Thursday, September 24, 2026 — exactly 39 years after the original NBC comedy first aired — and the announcement was made during Netflix's Celebration of Black Television at the American Black Film Festival (ABFF). Showrunner Felicia Pride, executive producer and director Debbie Allen, and new series lead Maleah Joi Moon were all on hand for the big reveal.
Meet Deborah Wayne.
The teaser centers on Moon in character as Deborah Wayne, wearing a Hillman letterman jacket. The camera circles her as she hums, and the clip closes with her lifting her shades and looking directly into the camera. Those flip-up shades, by the way? Not an accident. The youngest Wayne is sporting a pair of flip-up glasses—a clear nod to the iconic ones her daddy, Dwayne Wayne, made famous in the original series.
Deborah is described as "lovingly sheltered" and "a free spirit with a flair for the spotlight and a big heart." She's the daughter of two Hillman legends, and from the looks of this teaser, she is ready to make her own mark on campus.
The Legacy Cast Is Coming Home
This isn't a reboot that erases what came before—it's a sequel that honors it. Seven Hillman alumni are set to reprise their roles: Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert, Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, Charnele Brown as Kimberly Reese, Jenifer Lewis as Dorothy Dandridge Davenport, and Jada Pinkett Smith as Lena James.
That's not a cameo—that's a homecoming.
A New Generation Steps Up
Joining Moon in the new Hillman generation are Alijah Kai as Rashida Duvall, Cornell Young IV as Shaquille Johnson, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir Rodale, Kennedi Reece as Hazel Henry, and Chibuikem Uche as Kojo Achebe. The blend of fresh faces and returning icons is precisely the kind of generational handoff that a show like this deserves.
The Team Behind the Vision
Felicia Pride serves as showrunner and executive producer, while Debbie Allen—who directed 83 episodes of the original series—returns to executive produce and direct the premiere episode. Allen, who was present at ABFF for the announcement, expressed her belief that this moment is significant: "There couldn't be a better time than now to reboot A Different World. Our show changed lives, tripled the enrollment of historically Black colleges, and gave a strong voice and platform for young Black America.
Showrunner Felicia Pride (Grey's Anatomy, Bel-Air) added her own personal stakes to the project: "It is such an honor to be a part of bringing back this iconic show, one that I grew up on and which had a profound impact on my life. I am so proud of the work we're doing to reimagine A Different World for beloved fans and new generations alike."
What to Expect
Netflix will drop all 10 episodes of the single-camera comedy at once, skipping the split-release strategy the streamer has leaned on for many of its comedies. The series was filmed in Atlanta, and the full Season 1 director lineup reflects a strong commitment to Black women behind the camera alongside Allen—a detail that matters just as much as what's in front of the lens.
The Bottom Line
A Different World wasn't just a TV show. It was a cultural institution that made HBCUs visible, aspirational, and essential at a time when mainstream media barely acknowledged they existed. For an entire generation of Black viewers, Hillman College was real. This sequel carries the weight of that legacy, and based on the first teaser, the team is fully aware of its significance.
September 24 cannot get here fast enough.
