NBC Doubles Down on Comedy: 'St. Denis Medical' and 'Happy's Place' Renewed for Season 3

NBC has made its first major moves for the 2026-27 television season, renewing both "St. Denis Medical" and "Happy's Place" for third seasons, signaling the network's renewed commitment to character-driven comedy in an increasingly fragmented television landscape.

The dual renewal announcement marks a significant vote of confidence for both sophomore series, which have steadily built audiences across linear broadcasts and Peacock streaming. The decision comes as broadcast networks continue to navigate the challenge of maintaining comedy programming in an era dominated by streaming platforms and reality television.

"Both 'St. Denis Medical' and 'Happy's Place' have delivered comedic brilliance over their first two seasons, truly connecting with our audience with hilarious characters, and remain hugely important and successful programs to our primetime and Peacock lineup," said Lisa Katz, President of Scripted Content for NBC and Peacock.

"St. Denis Medical," created by "Superstore" mastermind Justin Spitzer and Eric Ledgin, follows the staff and patients of an underfunded Oregon hospital navigating both the healthcare system and their personal lives. The mockumentary format has proven particularly effective, with the series becoming the only primetime comedy across broadcast networks to show season-over-season linear growth in the crucial 18-49 demographic, up 3% this season according to Nielsen's Live+3 ratings.

Performance Metrics

St. Denis Medical's January 5 episode marked the highest-rated episode in the demo since the series premiere and became the most-watched episode of Season 2 in total viewers. Meanwhile, Happy's Place saw its January 23 episode rank as the best of the season in both demographics and total viewers.

The Reba McEntire-led "Happy's Place" centers on Bobbie, who inherits her father's tavern only to discover she has a previously unknown half-sister and business partner in Isabella. The series has demonstrated consistent growth, with its first quarter 2026 average up 15% in the demo and 22% in total viewers compared to the fourth quarter 2025 average.

Both series have benefited from NBC's dual-platform strategy, airing in primetime before becoming available on Peacock the following day. This approach has allowed the shows to build cumulative audiences that extend well beyond their same-day linear numbers, a critical factor in the network's renewal decisions.

The renewals leave two NBC comedies—"Stumble" and "The Fall and Rise of Reggie Dinkins"—still awaiting word on their futures. The network also has three sitcom pilots under consideration for next season, including an LA private eye comedy from Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici, a therapist-focused series starring Jane Lynch and Katey Sagal, and the romantic comedy "Newlyweds" executive produced by Jamie Lee Curtis.

As NBC continues to build out its comedy slate for 2026-27, these early renewals demonstrate the network's strategy of nurturing character-driven ensemble comedies that can grow their audiences over time—a increasingly rare approach in an industry often focused on immediate hits. Both "St. Denis Medical" and "Happy's Place" will return for their third seasons later this year.
