Welcome Back to Hillman: A Different World Netflix Sequel Adds Jenifer Lewis, Charnele Brown, and Five More to an Already Stacked Cast
Production is officially underway in Atlanta, and the alumni roster just keeps growing
Sound the alarm. Hillman College is officially back in session — and the reunion is getting even sweeter.
Netflix's highly anticipated A Different World sequel series has begun production in Atlanta, Georgia, and with cameras rolling, the announcements are coming fast. Newly confirmed, Jenifer Lewis will once again step into the role of Dorothy Dandridge Davenport, now returning to Hillman as a professor after previously serving as dean. Charnele Brown is also back as Kimberly Reese, continuing her character's journey in this next chapter. Jojocrews
The two powerhouse actresses join a returning ensemble that already had fans buzzing. The OGs who will reprise their roles include Kadeem Hardison as Dwayne Wayne, Jasmine Guy as Whitley Gilbert-Wayne, Darryl M. Bell as Ron Johnson, and Cree Summer as Freddie Brooks. That's six original cast members confirmed — and counting.
The New Class
As exciting as the returning faces are, the show's future hinges on its next generation, and that cast is looking promising. The sequel series centers on Deborah Wayne, played by Tony Award winner Maleah Joi Moon, the youngest daughter of Dwayne and Whitley. According to the show's description, Deborah heads to Hillman as a freshman and finds the shadow of her parents difficult to escape — a rich premise that any child of legendary parents can relate to.
She'll be surrounded by a full freshman class of her own. Previously announced newcomers include Alijah Kai Haggins as Rashida, Cornell Young as Shaquille, Kennedi Reece as Hazel, Jordan Aaron Hall as Amir, and Chibuikem Uche as Kojo.
And now, five additional new cast members have been revealed to round out the world. Vincent Jamal Hooper (Chicago Med) joins as Ellington, Elijah J. Roberts (Night Swim) as Jalen, Renee Harrison (All American: Homecoming) as Candace, Famecia Ward as Nellie Gaines, and Dasan Frazier (Straw) as Xavier.
The Legends Behind the Camera
The show isn't just stacked in front of the lens. The series will be led by showrunner Felicia Pride, with Debbie Allen returning as director and executive producer. Original creators Reggie Rock Bythewood and Gina Prince-Bythewood also return as executive producers. Debbie Allen's fingerprints on this revival should give fans enormous confidence — it was her vision that transformed the original series into the culturally iconic show it became.
Why This Moment Matters
A Different World was never just a sitcom. It was a lifeline. For a generation of Black viewers who rarely saw themselves reflected in college life on television, Hillman College was aspirational, affirming, and deeply personal. The original series is widely credited with increasing enrollment at HBCUs throughout the late 1980s and 1990s — a cultural impact that few television shows can claim.
Bringing it back now, in an era where HBCUs are once again at the center of national conversations about education, identity, and legacy, feels not just timely but necessary. The casting of Maleah Joi Moon — a Tony Award winner at the helm of the next generation — signals that this revival isn't treating its legacy as a gimmick. It's building on it.
The half-hour show will join a lineup of Netflix productions filmed in Atlanta, including Stranger Things and the upcoming 'Tis So Sweet, among others.
No premiere date has been announced yet, but with cameras already rolling in Atlanta, Hillman's doors are opening sooner than you might think.
Class is in session. We're ready.
