MGM+ Greenlights 'The Magnificent Seven' Series from 'Heroes' Creator Tim Kring
The classic Western 'The Magnificent Seven' is officially returning to the screen, this time as an eight-episode drama series for MGM+. The new adaptation hails from acclaimed writer and producer Tim Kring, best known as the creator of the hit series Heroes.
Production for the series is targeted to begin in June 2026, with the show set to stream in the U.S., UK, and several other international territories on MGM+ (which is owned by Amazon).
Plot and Premise: A Modern Take on a Classic Theme
The series will be set in the tumultuous 1880s American frontier and reimagines the core tale of unity against oppression.
The official synopsis reveals that the series will center on a peaceful Quaker village massacred by mercenaries working for a land baron. The community then hires seven skilled but flawed mercenaries for protection. The narrative will explore the moral dilemma of using violence to defend a non-violent people, delving into the backgrounds and motivations of the mercenaries, similar to the original film and Seven Samurai.
Creative Team and Production
Tim Kring is attached as writer and executive producer. Executive producers also include Donald De Line, Lawrence Mirisch, and Bruce Kaufman. Lawrence Mirisch's father, Walter Mirisch, produced the 1960 film.
Michael Wright of MGM+ praised Kring's approach for capturing the spirit of a classic Western while honoring the original film's themes.
Casting and Release
Casting for the series has not yet been announced.
This new project supersedes a previously planned adaptation from Nic Pizzolatto, which is no longer in development.
Further updates on casting and production will be provided as filming approaches in 2026.
